With last year's extraordinary scholar weekend fresh in our minds, we asked our own Rabbi Goldstein's brother to return to Sha'arey Shalom again this year. David is Rabbi Emeritus of Touro Synagogue in New Orleans, a founding faculty member of the Tulane University Jewish Studies Program, and now an Adjunct Professor at Tulane.
David is a wonderful speaker, who specializes in Spanish Jewry. His topic: "Wine, Women and Death: The Drama of the Golden Age of Jewish Life in Moslem Spain".
(A contribution of $18.00 is requested for the Sunday Brunch)
Our wonderful energetic Cantor will be engaged in a challenging 5 day hike across northern Israel, through "OneFamily", an organization dedicated to providing assistance to the thousands of terror victims and their families throughout Israel. As we track Cantor's progress, we will also raise a minimum of $2,500 in donations to the "OneFamily" Fund, helping re-build shattered lives.
The Afro-Semitic Experience is a remarkable band of African-American and Jewish-American musicians who are dedicated to promoting the rich cultural and musical heritage of the Jewish and African diasporas. Think Gospel, Klezmer, Spirituals, Bebop and Swing… all reflected through our mutual narratives.
Co-Sponsored by Renaissance, Religious School and other donors.
Dr. Glassman, a visiting scholar at Columbia University Medical School, is a prominent figure in the field of cognitive and behavioral therapy. With offices in Mountainside and Manhattan, he is a pioneer in the field of hypnotherapy. Dr. Glassman will speak with us on the therapeutic value of Shabbat, in two parts:
Erev Shabbat: "Jewish Style Meditation"
Shabbat Afternoon: Following worship and lunch, Dr. Glassman will lead a workshop on stress-management techniques with applications to Shabbat.
One week before Passover, we will be honored to host a "Freedom Seder", engaging members of the African-American community, and of Sha'arey Shalom. Using a special Haggadah entitled "A Common Road to Freedom", this will be a unique opportunity to share the values of Pesah.
Co-Sponsored by the African-American Jewish Coalition and the Chick Danziger Memorial Freedom Seder Fund
Rabbi Goldstein will be reporting on his winter trip, which will involve study at the Shalem Center. He will share reflections on life in our Jewish homeland, as well as the challenges Israel faces, including potential responses to a nuclear Iran.
