Temple Sha'arey Shalom 5th Graders & the Torah Factory

The 5th grade Religious School class at Temple Sha'arey Shalom in Springfield recently participated in The Torah Factory program. The students learned about the extraordinarily complex process of creating a Torah scroll, the most precious article in Jewish life. They viewed actual samples that illustrate the process--starting with the raw hide--through tanning and sanding. The children mixed ingredients to make ink and write their Hebrew name with a goose quill in the special script used by a "sofer" (Torah scribe). The Torah Factory program is sponsored by The Living Legacy, who visit the Temple's school several times a year to present dynamic and engaging presentations that involve children in Jewish learning.
